The American Physical Society (APS) http://www.aps.org, a non-profit membership organization working to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics, seeks a skilled administrative support specialist to fill the position of Education Programs Coordinator. This position is based at APS Headquarters in College Park, MD (near DC Metro Green Line). Supporting the Education and Diversity Department, the Coordinator provides administrative support to the Committee on Education (COE) and the Physics Teacher Education Coalition (PhysTEC), a national program to recruit and educate more K-12 physics teachers. The coordinator also assists with other department activities as needed.
Lead coordinator for COE, coordinate PhysTEC activities
Accountable for effectively meeting all objectives, deliverables, and deadlines associated assigned projects.
Coordinate COE programs, including posters, networking events, etc.
Coordinate logistics for in-person committee meetings and events, videoconferences, and subcommittee meetings with support from Awards and Committees Coordinator
Moderate committee listserv
Maintain webpages related to COE and education programs
Assist with organizing the annual PhysTEC conference
Work with communications to develop publicity plans for PhysTEC activities. Coordinate occasional mailings of publications and other materials.
Track project expenses and approve invoices. Prepare internal reports.
Coordinate internal and external meetings
Help maintain the PhysTEC website and listserv
Collect and organize project data information
Other duties assigned
Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
Experience: Minimum three years of work experience in a similar role, or demonstrated skills/expertise in this area.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must be able to work independently with little or no supervision for extended periods, proactively identify and respond to needs, and exercise judgment. Must have ability to take initiative in identifying and responding to issues as they arise. Strong, polished interpersonal, written and oral communication skills are necessary. Must have the ability to handle several complex projects simultaneously, possess excellent organizational skills, and meet deadlines. Computer skills and high level of proficiency in standard office software are essential. Customer service orientation desired, including ability to resolve conflicts constructively, and to empathize and understand perspectives of others. Need to demonstrate willingness and ability to work as a team player. Must be able to travel a few times per year.
