The Managing Editor works directly with the Senior Manager of Content Strategy/Editor-in-Chief to develop and finalize lineups for each issue of Legal Management and make all appropriate assignments of writers. You will organize the editorial calendar, production schedules and dates for all issues. Essential responsibilities include:
Responsibilities for Legal Management include solicitation of articles, headshots and bios from authors, evaluating manuscripts, reporting, writing and editing, as well as, following up with authors and fact-checking articles. Submits all content to Senior Manager of Content Strategy for review. Helps set art direction and style of publication working along the design team. Manages outside design team during layout and sign off of the publication.
Produces the annual print issue of Legal Management. Handles the solicitation of articles, headshots and bios from authors; evaluates manuscripts, reporting, writing and editing, as well as follow up with authors and fact-checking articles.
Delegates editorial work to the Copywriter/Editor including editing existing copy and creating new copy for departments and columns within Legal Management.
Curates theLegal ManagementTwitter page with content tweets and replies.
You will also assist the Senior Manager of Content Strategy in producing publications and/or content for special projects such ALA’s Annual Conference coverage, and/or ALA’s social media presence. This includes editing session descriptions and bios once they are in the content management system for ALA conferences. And you'll contribute to other e-newsletters as needed, including BOLD Bites and Just the Facts
We're looking for someone with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Requires knowledge of practice and principles of magazine publishing, as normally acquired with a bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism or related field and at least three years of managerial editorial experience.
Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills, combined with knowledge of production, design and printing. Strong attention to detail required.
Ability to move projects forward in a collaborative team environment to meet tight deadlines; able to work on several projects simultaneously.
Strong people skills needed to coordinate efforts of volunteer writers, staff and vendors.
Knowledge of the legal management profession.
Knowledge and proficiency of critical software (including Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office and SharePoint) along with various internet resources. Also, has knowledge of digital publications and familiarity working with social media platforms
